Your home is your sanctuary, especially these days! We all want our homes to be comfortable, functional and incorporate our personalities. And thankfully, there are a lot of ways you can achieve a look that is 100% you.
We have a shared 10 home decorating ideas and quick decorating tips you can use to spruce up your home, and still have some money for takeout!
1. Go Green with Plants
Just plants, not animals. No green thumb required. Bringing bright green plants indoors instantly freshens the space. It’s also very good for your indoor air quality. Hanging plants or air plants are a popular way to add greenery to your home. Air plants don’t take a lot of care, and they are very light, so the holders can be easily put up. Also, consider a nice spider plant. Believe us, they cannot be killed! And they produce shoots that you just clip off and place into earth for additional plants. A super easy and simple idea is to clip larger twigs and place them in a vase for height and invest in some twinkle lights to weave through them.
2. LED Lights in Your Closet
The average closet is pretty dark, even with overhead lights. That’s because clothes take on a whole life of their own! You can purchase very inexpensive LED light strips and apply they right above your hanging clothes. They add a nice glow to your closet and makes it feel like a whole room. If you have room, you can add in a mirror, which also helps bounce the light around the closet and makes the space brighter and seem larger…and who doesn’t want a larger closet? Anyone?
3. Get Organized
The easiest way to make your home look nicer is to take things out of your home. A simple way to get organized is to move all items that are in the same category to the same room. For example, kids’ toys shouldn’t be in every room, and wouldn’t it be nice if they were limited to one room? Once you get all those items into the same space, you can see what you have and can make decisions about what to donate, and whether there are items that you should store. If you need to store anything, contact your friendly neighbourhood self-storage facility…wink wink!
4. Invest in a Curved Shower Curtain Rod
We’ve mentioned these before. It’s because curved shower curtain rods look more luxurious and instantly makes your bathroom look updated. They usually have to be affixed to the ceiling which gives you the added benefit of adding some height to the look of your shower because the eye is drawn upwards.
5. Update your Headboard
A great way to freshen a bedroom and bring in your personality is by updating your headboard. You could get a new one, paint your existing one (maybe with a pop colour…which we talk about more in #5), or cover your existing one in fabric to give it a 100% makeover. You can also get really creative and make your own with barnwood, pallets, window frames, wooden shutters, floating shelves, pieces of art, or blank artist canvas that you paint yourself for a fully custom headboard. Rather than a physical headboard, you can also paint a focal point on the wall behind your bed. There are definitely tons of options here and so many ways to get creative.
6. Shelving
Shelving can add height to any room and give you a place to put your collectables, knick-knacks and favourite items. Floating shelves are a great way to display items of interest – like something you picked up while travelling, or family pictures – without taking up floor space. If you have the space or want to do something more unique, consider making your own shelving using wooden crates, plastic crates or old wooden dressers or ladders.
7. Pop Colours
If you have a smaller space, like a narrow hallway or small closet, think about painting it with a pop colour. A lighter colour, like turquoise, will reflect light better and make the space appear bigger, and will also feel fresh.
8. Wallpaper Feature
Wallpaper is now sold in much smaller quantities, so why not create a wallpaper wall? Having one wall done with the wallpaper is less busy than a whole room, and it adds a depth to the wall, making the space appear larger. Have a bold personality? Wallpaper feature walls are a fantastic way to do something bold, because you can tone down that boldness with plain paint on the surrounding walls. For added funkiness, you can choose a textured wallpaper.
9. Make Some Art
Frames are becoming more affordable and there are so many styles and sizes to choose from. So, why not purchase some frames, and then create the art? It’s a fun and unique project you can do as a family, and it’s one that will build memories and 100% personalize your home. The beauty of it is that you can switch out the art, or even have season themes. Something simple like stenciling your names, or doing “self-portraits” artistically, are personal and heart-warming.
10. Add Texture to Your Walls
If you appreciate the vintage look, this idea is perfect for you! To add texture to your walls you need textured wall paper (which is really more of a foam material), a chair rail and paint. Getting it down is as easy as 1-2-3. First install a chair rail, then apply the textured wallpaper below the chair rail, and lastly you paint the entire wall one colour. The effects create an interesting, vintage feel room.
