Woodstock is The Friendly City, and it’s not just because everyone waves and asks your name and story; there’s also a lot going on and a BIG community feel. It’s a fantastic community to be part of and enjoy as a visitor. When we were new to town after opening our Woodstock self-storage facility, we explored all of the winter things, in particular Christmas things.
We love the holiday season, especially because always so much to do and see this time of year, so we decided to share some great winter activities Woodstock has to offer this winter. And with COVID restrictions still in place this year, and everyone feeling hopeful, but still a little nervous, we’re focusing on more outdoor friendly activities.
Take a Walk – Pittock Conservation Area: The Pittock Conservation Area goes along the Thames River Reservoir in Woodstock. It’s quiet in the winter, but that’s part of the charm, and why we really like it and. The forest is alive with birds and other wildlife, and it’s a very peaceful time-out from the hustle of this time of year. Get more information here: https://www.pittockconservationarea.ca/.
Pick up a Cheese Plate – The Oxford County Cheese Trail: Woodstock is the Diary Capital, so it’s not surprising that there is a serious cheese trail as well. You can download a self-guided tour map and enjoy cheese samples and shop for unique, and extremely delicious, local cheeses. Look at Tour Oxford’s webpage for more details and to download the guide: https://www.tourismoxford.ca/things_to_do/culinary_and_farms/cheese_trail.aspx. For us, it’s all about Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese, and we’re starting to see this brand in grocery stores, so clearly, many agree! Remember though, you probably have to call ahead to each spot to book your tour.
Skate!: Winter is for skating. The J.L. Scott McLean Outdoor Recreation Pad is a new, outdoor skating area, in the Town of Tillsonburg (not far from Woodstock). Be sure to check out the skating times (and if you need a reservation) here: https://www.tillsonburg.ca/en/live-and-play/Arenas.aspx#J-L-Scott-McLean-Outdoor-Recreation-Pad.
Woodstock Santa Claus Parade: Everyone loves Santa Claus, and everyone loves a Santa Claus parade. The parade was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but the public has overwhelmingly asked for it back this year! The parade runs Sunday, December 12th at 2:00pm, which is a little different than the previous parade that ran at night. More information can be found at: https://www.cityofwoodstock.ca/en/live-and-play/santa-claus-parade.aspx#
Tour of Lights: Woodstock has historically held a Tour of Lights where participants jumped onto a bus and drove around. In 2020, it was converted to a virtual event and that format is likely remaining for 2021 which featured a virtual tour through Rogers TV and City’s YouTube channel. More details will be released soon but keep an eye on this webpage: https://www.tourismoxford.ca/plan_your_trip/attractions/woodstock_tour_of_lights.aspx.
Don’t forget, Santa is stopping by our place December 24th because he ran out of room at the North Pole for all the gifts, so if you want us to chat with him to get you onto the Nice list, just give us a call.
