Fall is when kids go back to school, the weather turns crisp, and the harvest is in. It is also a season where there is so much do to in Halton.
The good news is that Halton has plenty of outdoor focused activities, that are family-friendly, and fairly weather resistant. As we continue to practice social distancing and wearing masks, it’s nice to also have activities to look forward to. If we’ve forgotten about a hidden gem, please let us know. We love sharing ideas with our community and encouraging everyone to get out and be active!
Andrews Farm Market & Winery: For those of you who grew up in the area, you know that this place used to be called Andrews’ Scenic Acres. It’s still very scenic with 165 acres of gorgeous escarpment countryside. It has trails, wagon rides, playgrounds, animal pens, a big straw mountain, corn walks and of course, it’s a real farm, so there is berry picking during the summer, and in the fall, pumpkins galore. Andrews has been operating pretty consistently during the pandemic, so it has its protocols nailed down and knows how to ensure there’s lots of space between people. We love taking kids to visit Andrews and look forward to their Pumpkin Fundraiser for the Townsend Smith Foundation on October 16 & 17, 2021. Chudleigh’s Farm and Blossom Café: Fall isn’t really here unless we talk about apples, and Halton has one of the very best apple farms, Chudleigh’s Farm. The Chudleigh’s brand has also created a very cool café on Main Street Milton, called Blossom Café. We love going here when we need a coffee and to pick up some treats for the weekend. Our kids all love going to Chudleigh’s Farm because, let’s be honest, their playground is amazing – slides that make moms hold their breaths. We also love their expanded animal section, and just riding around on the wagon can be more peaceful than you can imagine – acres of apple trees, it’s awesome to experience a true, working farm. Obviously, it goes without saying that the apple cider and famous apple blossoms are delicious. One of the silver linings of COVID is that tickets have to be pre-purchased, which means entry is really simple. Go online to book now: https://www.chudleighs.com/
Crawford Lake Conservation Area: Storage Solutions Milton is close to a lot of the Conservation Halton areas. One that we really like is the Crawford Lake Conservation Area. They are currently also featuring a pop-up restaurant by NishDisk Marketeria and Catering, which serves Indigenous cuisine. The longhouse village and lessons on local First Nations’ history are especially topical now. We love walking on the Nassagaweya Canyon Trail (but bring water and wear the right shoes!) and connecting with nature. It really is a unique outdoor learning adventure and worth checking out. Please note, reservations are required, and you can book at: https://www.conservationhalton.ca/park-details?park=crawford-lake.
Meet Area 8”: This seems so cryptic we have to check it out! Conservation Halton is getting ready to launch a new conservation area, currently called Area 8, but the final name is TBD. Until September 26, 2021, there is the opportunity to “Meet Area 8”, which is a guided hike through the newest park. You NEED to book this, and it is a 2 hour adventure: https://conservationhalton.ca/experience-details?eventID=372. BTW - This site used to be known as the Kelso Quarry and it does have a beautiful water area.
Farmer’s Market, Milton Fairgrounds: Fall means cooking and enjoying the harvest (at least to us). So, we love visiting the Milton farmers’ market. The produce is beautiful and fresh, the stalls are well spaced out, and there is ample parking now that this event has been moved to the Milton Fairgrounds. The market runs from Victoria Day through to Thanksgiving, and we recommend getting there earlier in the morning, so you get first pick of the products. It’s such a wonderful, family-centred time of year and we hope you get outside, enjoy the company, and experience Halton.
