We all have spaces we wish were a lot bigger. Our self-storage units can help you make space, but there are also some specific colours that give the illusion of a bigger space. *sigh* Doesn’t that sound wonderful?
As we move more towards working from home, and are spending more time at home, improving every little nook and cranny has taken a higher priority for many. People are looking for inexpensive, easy ways to make a room look bigger and feel bigger.
Did you know that you can use paint to alter a room’s size or shape? Paint is a relatively inexpensive way to update your space, and to boost your mood too. The colour you choose for a room will 100% impact the effect it has on the room’s size, and even more important, how you feel in it.
Pastel Colours
White makes rooms look bigger because it reflects the most light, but it can also feel institutional. An off-white or even better, a pastel can add a lot of light, and still bring in some warmth or freshness. Sea foam might be a little too ‘Florida’ for our Canadian winters, but a much lighter version can make you feel like you’re in the sky. Instead of a baby pink, go with white with just a touch of pink to add warmth.
Warm Blues
Blue can be warm or cold, but there is something soothing about warm blues, especially turquoise. Fun Fact – warm blues have a bit of yellow in them, so they are leaning towards green, which is what makes them “warm”.
Glossy Paint
Glossy paint isn’t really a colour - it’s a finish that reflects more light, and makes a space feel brighter. For large walls, semi-gloss finishes are best because too much sheen can make the room overwhelming and a little too glaring. In smaller spaces, like a washroom, glossy finishes work well and help make the room appear brighter because they reflect the light well. Glossy paints are also easier to wipe clean, so depending on what room you are looking to paint bigger, this may help you decide what finish is best.
Neutral Colours
Light grey or light beige brighten a space. Again, they are mainly white paints, with just a touch of another colour. If you want to give the illusion of more space, choose a neutral colour and continue it from room to room. This way, your eye doesn’t register the space breaks, and so it sees a large, continuous wall.
Dark neutral colours don’t necessarily make your space seem smaller, think about older homes with dark blues and maroons on the walls. The walls actually feel more expansive and grand. You need the right space for this, and the right ‘tolerance’ and appreciation for darker colours.
