Have you looked at your home’s exterior lately and thought it was looking a little drab or not so neat and tidy as you’d like too? Making your home look nice and welcoming on the outside can be done without taking on crazy, multi-day project, and without investing in lots of exterior house décor items.
Below we’ve shared 6 home exterior improvement tasks that can be done quickly, or with some planning and prep, and maybe some extra hands, in a few hours or day.
1. Garden Lights
Like interior lighting, outdoor lighting has evolved over the last few years. Garden lights (or solar lights) are a quick and way to improve the outside appeal of your home. An added benefit is that you don’t need to wire solar lights, which means they are a quick way to spruce up your outdoor space. They are also reasonably priced and easy to find too. We especially love our solar garden lights (which we found at Home Depot). They made our front garden look complete and offered a nice glow at night.
2. Freshen Up Your Front Door
Europeans know how important a front door is. That’s why they all have beautiful, colourful doors that instantly make a visitor feel more welcomed. Your front door gets constant use and abuse, which leaves scuffs and scratches, which can make it look tired fast. A good coat of paint can quickly brighten and freshen up a dull front door. Make sure you select good quality exterior paint and choose a good ‘popping’ colour, which will draw the eye to your front door (especially if your window shutters are looking a little tired…which you could paint as well). And when buying your paint, make sure you ask about how to prepare the door for the painting. They will have lot of great tips and advice for you, like to avoid painting when it’s just rained or is cool and damp outside, as the paint will bubble and peel off.
3. Mailbox Upgrade
Mailboxes are functional, but there are some that are also beautiful. Upgrading your mailbox really leads to an instant change to the front of your house as it adds additional character or personality to a home. If you already have a nice mailbox, you might consider re-painting yours to be a fresher colour, or glossier black which will give it a polished and shiny look.
4. Becoming a Gardener
Nothing makes a home look nicer than flowers or beautiful shrubs and garden beds. You don’t need to go all out on your first attempt to make the exterior of home look nicer either. Investing in a few nice pots and some bright flowers are an instant way to make a positive impact on your home’s exterior. You can build on your garden as the years go by and your taste or likes change, and as you develop your gardening skills. Some garden centres offer garden consultations that they will credit towards plants to take the time to see what your local garden centres have to offer. There’s also a wealth of knowledge on the internet about how to plan a nice garden.
5. Tidy Up
Another great way to upgrade your home exterior is to tidy it up. This means that you need to use your garage. If you have seasonal items, like that big snow blower, or tools, that you don’t need to access every single day, then consider renting a self storage unit to give yourself some extra space – or at least, give your car some space to park. This project can take more time, but if you do it in stages, the impact of your tidying efforts will add up fast making your home’s exterior look top notch! This may be a great project for your family to take on…hint hint.
6. Paint Your Garage
Just like your front door, your garage has a lot of curb time (and can offer lots of curb appeal too). You want to keep your garage looking nice & fresh, and an inexpensive way to do that is to paint your garage door. Again, you will need to make sure you’re doing the right prep work for this and choosing the right exterior paint. This project will take you more than hour, but can be done quicker with help.
