Tips for Storing Your Recreational Equipment

We all need to have some fun outdoors, and for adults, that fun usually involves some serious (and seriously fun) equipment.

Maybe you have an ATV, quad bike, dirt bike, snowmobile, a personal watercraft (like a jet ski or a sea doo), kayak, canoe, or maybe a souped-up lawnmower. Whatever it is, you use it for the right season and then you have to figure out what to do with it in the off-season.

Tips for Storing Recreational Equipment

How you store your outdoor gear is up to you, but we have 3 longstanding tips & tricks to pass along to you, which some of our customers have shared with us over the years:

1. Keep it Clean & Dry! Don’t put a dirty bike into your unit, or a wet sled. You will regret this. It will cause damage to your equipment, which was pretty expensive to purchase. Any recreational gear that you plan to store in the off season(s) should be thoroughly washed and dried. If you are putting a personal watercraft in storage, really need to be cautious about moisture because it can damage an engine, especially in the freezing cold winter. you will need to make sure all the water is out the engine, which means you’ll need to run for a short period. m of this type should be hand washed and dried completely before storing.
2. Be Consistent: If you’re storing your jet skis, keep the life jackets with it. If you’re storing a canoe or kayak, store the lifejackets and paddles long with it. If you’re keeping your ATV or quad bike in your self storage unit, make sure your jacket and helmet are right there with it. This will save you from thinking these items are in your self- storage unit, only to discover you’ve taken them home and now have to make an extra trip.
3. Store it Properly: Different recreational items have different storage needs. For example, your very expensive mountain bike has different storage needs than your cross-country skis. Two excellent references for you are the owners’ manual and manufacturer’s website, which will give you great, up-to-date info and tips on how to store these when not being used. Also, some equipment comes with storage packaging to help lengthen the life of your items, so be sure to use it. When it comes to storing personal watercrafts or ATVs, you want to protect the engine by disconnecting and removing the battery. You can also prevent condensation by storing them with a full tank of gas and stabilizer in it.
