There are a lot of reasons why people need storage – some are very long term reasons, like the need to have a small, safe place for seasonal items, while some are very short term reasons – couple weeks in between homes and the family intends to take a longer vacation.
We often write about the long-term benefits of self-storage, but more recently, we’ve found people are generally in short-term uncertainty and transition. In these situations, flexible self-storage has really helped our customers out, so we decided to share these.
1. University or College Students
University or college students almost always need short-term storage. By nature, their housing leases are typically no more than one year, and so there are a few months over the summer where students move home to save funds, but still have all their furnishings (and books!). A small self-storage unit is the best answer. Our 5x10 units are the perfect size for students. We’ve seen some make great use of the entire space, knowing that everything in that unit does not need to be accessed until end of August. If you know this, that means you can pack boxes into every square inch of your unit and significantly save on costs. Learn more about the benefits of self-storage for students.
2. A House Offer You Couldn’t Refuse!
It may seem crazy, but some people are being made offers on their homes that are accelerating their life decisions. Whereas you might have thought you’d be in your home for another 10 years, you realize you’d rather cash out now, and enjoy some time travelling before figuring out where to settle. Our 10x10 or 10x20 units are the best choice because by this point, you will have made some decisions on the bulk of your furniture, but you still have key items you want to keep. At one point in the future you’ll need to furnish another (most likely, smaller) place and these key items will be waiting for you.
3. Downsizing Homes
You may have reached a point in your life where you are ready for a smaller home, but you may or may not be moving in with family in the future, or you want to see what living in a townhouse or apartment is like. For these reasons, you are not ready to let go of all your things because you might just need them. A larger storage unit, like a 10x20 self-storage unit, is a great solution as it gives you plenty of room for your belongings. Once you are ready to fully settle in your smaller home (whatever that may be) you can better determine what you want to keep and bring into your new home, and what you still want to keep but want to store. You no longer need a large storage unit for your belongings, so having the flexibility like you do at Storage Solutions, means you can move to a smaller self-storage unit, like a 10x10. Learn more about how self-storage can help you downsize.
4. Waiting, and Waiting, on your New Home
It’s not unusual for builders to run into delays. There are a lot of unforeseen circumstances with construction. And while you might have a projected closing date, sometimes that doesn’t work out. Life’s full of surprises… But you might have sold your current home to move geographically closer to your new neighbourhood. When you’re in-between places like this, a medium-sized self-storage unit is a great fit. Our month-to-month contracts ensure that you are not locked in, and so if you get the call that your house is ready for occupancy, you can act quick.
Short term storage needs are not as unusual as you might think. These days, life moves fast, and you need to be flexible. Our month-to-month contracts, 24/7 access, and our helpful staff make your storage experience easier so you can focus on your next step, not your storage unit.
